The End Of Sanity

The czech band Hypnotic Face was founded in 1994, in the city of Svitavy. In the beginning Viliam Slinták (vocals, guitar), Radek Bob Bednář (vocals, guitar) and the Přichystal brothers (bass-guitar and drums) were its members, the latters quit the band since, and I wouldn't want to bore anyone with the usual biographic part, the musicians came and went, and the band continued to go on its rocky road, until in 1995, they recorded their first and only demo, The AnimalMan, with its damned funny front cover, hehe (I don't know how political the stuff actually is, but the rhino is familiar from international politics). The band is certainly taking their time by the way... 4 years afterwards, an SP went on sale, titled Written by Life, which musically, listening into it on their website, was somewhere between Metallica and Over Kill. and finally came the LP in 2004, and this is what you're reading about now.

Not counting the pretty much cliché titles, lyrics and names, it's strong and mature stuff. Vibrant, dynamic and very diverse, it's hard to get bored with it. It has themes that provoce thought, aswell as rather simple ones, it has some very heavy parts and even some old rock motifs too. Somewhat more experienced and musical than its predecessor, and one can feel the effects too... The overall sound is very much like Anthrax, and is basically the old Metallica. First and foremost gives this one a pleasant and exciting 46 minutes to those old iron lice-fans. At some parts one can feel a bit of... And Justice for All, somewhat more Master of Puppets, but the most typical for these czechs is a good kind of Ride the Lightning album-interpretation, haha. And before I'd finish about the effects, a little Pantera hides too at places, and Over Kill comes in sometimes too... But nothing serious. Yes, yes, dear reader, this is genuine thrash metal, of that the old yet melodical, head-and-hair throwing, up-building mostrum. The sound is good, the booklet is fine too, and the drums are definitely like ...And Justice for All, likewise Viliam's voice is entirely like that of Hetfield...

I'd like to note on some from this metallic mass, the first true surprise was the great The Devil Within, which's acoustic parts remind one of Led Zeppelin, but the chorus and the mid-tempo are entirely Metallica. The solos are masterful, very exquisite with full drums, everything on its place, a great song! The most outstanding, though, is the title-song, The End of Sanity, an incredibly good song, basically like if it would be about Ride the Lightning, and although many hate Metallica nowadays (with right, definitely), one has to know that in their best times they made masterpieces, and this track is that too, ladies and gentlemen! The End on Clouds song is heavy, massive, like an unstoppable train, goes forth with its drums and straight guitars... Trash is tipical thrash in genre, it's got everything that is attributed to the genre, and a big shout-out goes to Vladimír Ebert for his very creative use of bipedal drums! M.L.A.H.L. raises up and lowers down at the same time, it has heaviness, and still balladistic, gets wings with pleasant rifts which then get dropped loaded with tonnes on the burning city, and Saturday is a typical winding thrash song, with a lot of chorus, bells and some crossover-taste in it.

The real advantage of the album is, that the topics raised up are used fully, are fully chewed on, and thus they don't become boring. All along the whole thing is tight and dynamic, and although they're in somewhat of an identity crisis, they can't be blamed because they play out of passion, and money has nothing to do with it. The other thing that's really positive for me is that although it's a sort of Metallica-replica, it still isn't that pop-commerce thing which we can hear on the black one, and which the likes of the finnish I am blood so willingly eats from. What this czech quartet will get to later is hard to foretell, they'll have to prove a lot on their next LP, finding their own identity also, and anyway I'll be looking forward to it, because this stuff is without uninteresting parts and is very much all right, from the perspective of both expertise and musical talent, and by the way they created a very nice nostalgic atmosphere with it, so I think I'm going to dig out of the depths of my closet my almost forgotten Metallica albums!

Do you remember Anthrax and Overkill the way they used to play? If not, here is your chance to check out the best of 80's influenced thrash/power metal! IF you do remember, then this album will give you a trip back to the best periods of these bands. There has been thousands of bands that have played this genre before, but not many plays it with such integrety and dedication that Hypnotic Face does. The Band has played together since the early 90's, and you can really hear that they know what they do. If this album had been released in 1987, Hypnotic Face would have been amongst the classic thrash bands!
But in an review there ought to be something negative too. And it's not that hard to find something negative when you look for it. Hypnotic Face should have released more albums!

Comments: Now this is Metal. It’s head-banging, ass-kicking excitement just the way it should be. There isn’t any moron's deep-throated unrecognizable Satan worshipping crap. This is brought to you old-school style in a way you can really enjoy. This has real lyrics with real messages delivered first class via Vilda Slintak, who bears no shortage of anger with his pissed-at-the-world, rebellious charm.

His irreligious roars initiate the proper atmosphere for any great metal song. The maniacal Radek Bob Bednar on the axe slices, dices and chops his way through the airwaves with the precision of a skilled surgeon. Vlad'ka Liskutinova provides the earth shaking, insurmountable power behind the rhythm section, while Meyra Ebert hammers and pounds the drums into your brain with the unbridled force of a juggernaut.

The songs seem to bring out a sense of frustration with the way things are in the world. The messages scream out with determination to effect a positive change while battling what appear to be insurmountable odds. At worst, this is a great release of pent up emotion. This album displays metal at its original core. It’s a little outdated, but some things just never seem to die easily and probably for good reason.

Here comes the new release by this amazing band. This guys have combined succesfully pure metal with more rocking elements and also with some thrash parts in the eleven tracks that are contained on this album. Good melodies are Hypnotic Face`s speciality and here you have them in tracks like "The Devil Within" along with heavy guitar riffs that give the power to the music. there are good guitar solos that show good taste along with good technical skills. One good thing about Hypnotic Face is that they combine energetic moments with more climatic ones. My absolute favorite track is "In This War" with full speed and aggression,a long with some vocals that reminded me of speed metal band Cacophony. The album has a good sound that allows the band to be fully heard. An original yet powerful band that continues in the right way !!

Gli HYPNOTIC FACE ci danno col loro “The End Of Sanity” un saggio di thrash “made in Repubblica Ceca”. Sempre grazie alla rediviva Shark, che per la seconda volta ci propone un prodotto musicalmente simile, dopo i compagni di scuderia HORRORSCOPE. Sufficiente la produzione, sebbene non all’altezza di quella di cui gode il positivissimo ultimo parto della band autrice di “The Crushing Design”.
Sebbene tecnicamente valido e compositivamente vario, “T.E.O.S.” non offre brani memorabili, per quanto mostri una band che esce alla distanza con un lavoro sicuramente personale. Peccato anche per l’uso talvolta scolastico della lingua inglese e per la prolissita di certi passaggi, che minano la necessaria capacita di sintesi per suonare effettivamente “cattivi”. E, a meno che non si abbia un approccio tecnicissimo (alla WatchTower, per citarne uno), col thrash e sempre meglio non andare per il sottile e pestare duro… Scandagliando le tracce emergono affinita talvolta “nobili”: e il caso del riffone alla ANNIHILATOR di “The Pimp”, con suggello di controcori Bay Area.
Altre volte si rimane invece quasi basiti per l’indecisione del gruppo: “From Hell” ha una partenza stranamente rockeggiante, per poi tramutarsi in un tempo medio stoppato in stile PRONG, dalle linee vocali “storte”. L’articolata “The Devil Within” nasce invece da arpeggi e assoli che ricordano il seminale “Doomsday For The Deceiver”, virando poi sugli XENTRIX di meta carriera, con relative porzioni da moshpit “controllato”. Non appena la ricetta inizia a ripetersi, sorgono inevitabili i primi dubbi e serpeggia il folletto maligno dello scetticismo: e il caso della veloce “In This War”, che riprende la strategia dell’opener, combinando elementi gia noti senza ottenere risultati significativi.
Anche la title-track, tradizionalmente punto di forza di ogni incisione, e un massiccio cadenzato impreziosito si da buone aperture, ma che non fa gridare al miracolo. Purtroppo, giunti nel cuore dell’album era lecito aspettarsi qualcosa di piu, in termini di impatto o di qualita compositiva. Fato vuole che la sorprendente ed ispirata “Nameless”, traccia melodica dalle vocals “acquatiche”, sterzi quel tanto che basta per risollevare le sorti del disco. E’ quasi paradossale che sia questa la canzone che spicca maggiormente nel contesto di un disco estremo.
Il resto offre le solite luci ed ombre tipiche di certe produzioni oneste ma fondamentalmente derivative: “Trash” si colloca tra i METALLICA e gli ARTILLERY meno oltranzisti; “Sea” e uno strano up-tempo di stampo EXODUS con curiose svisate hard rock che a suo tempo non portarono molta fortuna neppure ai THE ORGANIZATION (band di tutt’altra caratura), quindi non penso si debba aggiungere altro…
Poco ispirate le finali “M.L.A.H.L.” e “Saturday” (quest’ultima almeno serrata abbastanza da chiudere il CD in crescendo), che nulla aggiungono a quanto detto in precedenza. Non e una bocciatura, sia chiaro. Chiamiamola tirata d’orecchie. Se in futuro svilupperanno le loro idee in una sola direzione, evitando di disperdere il proprio potenziale, gli HYPNOTIC FACE potranno dare grandi soddisfazioni a chi crede ancora, come me, nel verbo del buon vecchio thrash metal. Per cui ci teniamo pronti per gli esami di recupero: togliere il freno a mano e ripresentarsi veloci e determinati, please!

Originaly recorded for the borndead German label Insanity Records, "The end of sanity" finaly ends in Shark's basket. HYPNOTIC FACE comes from Czech Republic and plays some original and quite hard to define metal music. The main rythm sections, solos and vocal lines sound really thrash and can remind old-METALLICA or old-RAGE from time to time (The pimp, The devil within), but the music also contains us-power metal syncopated rythms (From hell) and many punk-like riffs and especially vocals which aren't far from OFFSPRINGS's attitude. It all results in a pretty unique and very pleasant album which also got a real strength inside and an excellent sound quality (almost an exclusivity for a Shark record).

Prévu ŕ l'origine sur le label allemand mort-né Insanity Records, "The end of sanity" a finalement atterri dans la besace de Shark. HYPNOTIC FACE vient de République Tchčque et joue un metal plutôt original et difficilement classable dans les catégories habituelles. Les sections rythmiques, les solos et les lignes de voix sonnent trčs thrash et peuvent rappeler les vieux METALLICA ou RAGE ici oů lŕ (The pimp, The devil within), mais les titres contiennent aussi des rythmiques syncopées power-us (From hell) ainsi que nombre de riffs et surtout de vocaux punk-like qui ne sont pas sans évoquer la "OFFSPRING's attitude". Tout ça fait de ce disque un album relativement unique et plaisant, avec une bonne dose de patate ŕ l'intérieur et une excellente qualité sonore (chose rare de la part de Shark).

Savez vous ce qu'est un motoculteur ? Il s'agit d'un appareil a deux roues produisant un raffut infernal tout en labourant tout ce qui se présente sur son passage. Ainsi est Hypnotic Face, si l'on oublie toutefois le coté bruyant de l'engin. Leur bon gros thrash des familles reproduit en effet assez bien la sensation de ce sympathique moteur fumant et ronflant.
La section rythmique guitare/batterie y est certainement pour quelque chose, le batteur moulinant entre double pédale, caisse claire rapide et autres rythmes typiques. Notre six cordes, quant a elle, s'avere assez influencée par le jeu aujourd'hui culte des grand noms du métal de la toute fin des années 80, Metallica ou Megadeth en tete. C'est d'ailleurs la que le combo tcheque marque ses points, en produisant riffs tueurs, envolées mélodiques, solos inspirés, et autres passages acoustiques bienvenus. Dans leurs meilleurs moments, ces atouts aboutissent a quelques bombes thrashy, l'hymne "Saturday" ou "Sea" par exemple, ou encore l'intro killer de "Trash".
Mais Hypnotic Face possede malheureusement un autre point commun avec le motoculteur : l'entendre tourner pendant plus de 45 minutes peut s'avérer fatiguant a la longue. Cette sensation désagréable est notamment due a la voix, trop linéaire, et pas toujours bien en place. Autre faiblesse, quelques légers ratés dans la batterie malmenent la rythmique de l'ensemble. Et c'est la qu'on se dit "dommage", car a part ça, l'ensemble est plutôt bon, accrocheur comme il faut, mélodique quand il faut, la pointe de nostalgie en prime.
Alors si vous regrettez le bon vieux temps, si les bon gros "yeaaaah" embrumés de biere vous manquent, ou si plus simplement le thrash est votre pain quotidien, jetez vous sur ce "The End of Sanity". Dans le cas contraire, vous feriez peut-etre aussi bien de vous abstenir pour redécouvrir les "grands noms" susnommés, ou éventuellement attendre patiemment une prochaine livraison du groupe.

Et une pochette hideuse de plus, une ! Qui peut avoir envie d’acheter ce disque d’Hypnotic Face s'il ne connaît pas le groupe ? L’illustration n’est-elle pas sensée mettre en valeur le produit ? Un grand mystere récurrent propre a ces dernieres années et qui manifestement n’est pas pres de s’éclaircir…
« The End Of Sanity » est le premier album des Tcheques qui misent tout sur le groove et la puissance, situant clairement leur identité du côté de chez Suicidal Tendencies, ce qui n’est pas idiot quand on repense a l’activité musicale quasi-nulle des hommes de Mike Muir. Les guitares survoltées et les chours renforcent ce sentiment, et pour s’en convaincre il suffit de s’envoyer « Saturday », « The Pimp » ou encore « End On Clouds » qui s’inscrivent bien dans la tradition.
Pour une fois, un groupe signé par Shark Records a du son, mais il faut dire qu’un tel projet n’avait aucune chance avec une production bas de gamme.
« From Hell », « The Devil Within » et « The End Of Sanity » sortent un peu plus de l’esprit général de l’album, surtout en ce qui concerne le chant, cristallisant le fait que le groupe semble toujours quelque peu chercher sa voie.
Reste a savoir, si de nos jours, il reste un petite place pour les groupes oeuvrant dans un style particulierement touché par le silence radio pratiqué par ses chefs de file, qui peuvent quasiment etre rangés au chapitre des démissionnaires.
Hypnotic Face prouve néanmoins ce que notre rédac en chef prône depuis un bon moment : les pays de l’Est ne sont plus autant décalés qu’on veut bien le laisser entendre et désormais ils bénéficient localement de moyens techniques leur permettant de rivaliser avec leurs homologues sensés etre mieux armés.

Décidemment les pays de l'est nous proposent toujours des groupes de qualité. Ici la livraison des tchčques de HYPNOTIC FACE rappčle plutôt la scęne Rock'n Roll / Thrash, que ses compagnons d'aventure d'une scęne généralement ancrée dans l'extręme le plus intense. On pense notamment ŕ MEGADETH, de part des riffs cartons et mélodiques, et une voix charismatique et assez grave. J'ai aussi beaucoup pensé ŕ nos chers et regrettés VULCAIN, ŕ cause du côté Rock'n Roll survitaminé qui sort de certains titres (l'imparable "Saturday" par exemple). Du côté historique, sachez que HF a sorti une premičre démo "The Animalman" en 1995, puis un premier EP "Written By Life" en 1999.
La production est franchement pas mal, le son des grattes est gras ŕ souhait, les grosses caisses claquent de maničre bien puissante. Clairement basé sur les riffs qui tuent, on trouvera en revanche quelques soli pas folichons. De męme, il y a aussi quelques titres en deça du reste, et les backing vocals sont pas forcément bien amenés ŕ chaque fois. Mais c'est bien lŕ les seuls points négatifs que j'ai ŕ leur reprocher. Ils ne manquent ni de charisme, ni d'énergie, ni de bons riffs qui font headbanguer gaiement! des titres comme "The Pimp", "In this War" ou encore "Sea" sont, certes nostalgiques, mais tout simplement imparables.

Hypnotic Face have come back after a self-released debut “Written By Life”. It has been a long time and a long, rocky road for the Czechs to get this newest album released. Though it was planned for release last year through a then new German Insanity Records, unfortunately (or luckily) the label folded before they managed to release this album. So, Hypnotic face had to search on and “The End Of Sanity” is finally out through another German label Shark Records. This new outing is longer, more complex and more exciting than it’s predecessor. This time around, the guys augmented the thrashing sounds, on occasion sounding like Anthrax (melody-wise) and sometimes throwing in even Pantera-like chopped riffs. All together, Hypnotic Face have strengthened the presence of old elements already present in their music, while still adding some new stuff.
So, in completion, we have some 46 minutes of good Czech melodic thrash metal, not looking much like some of the purveyors of this style in their country like Debustrol, Arakain or Törr, but still good enough to stand on their own. “The End Of Sanity” should be the album to take them one step up on the metal ladder and bring them following outside of Czech Republic, particularly in Germany. If you recognized your musical taste in some of elements I mentioned here, make sure you check this band out. They’re not any worse than some of the more accepted bands in Western Europe or USA.

Vad är nu detta som bepryder skivans framsida? Nog för att jag förmodligen saknar en konstnärlig adra, men det här ser ju bara estetiskt motbjudande ut. Nagot ögongodis bjuds det alltsa inte pa, men lat oss istället hoppas att tjeckerna har känsla för det musikaliska. Ja, det var ju just det. Tredje givet (första för Shark records), The end of sanity är en duglig historia, precis som med sa mycket annat. Jag uppskattar kvartettens ärlighet och ”pang-pa-rödbetan”-attityd, men det är ocksa ungefär allt.

Det är Megadeth som gäller, och även om Hypnotic face tolkar det hela mycket bra och lägger till en egen dimension till musiken med bl.a. akustiskt gitarrplock och en lite punkigare sang, sa känns det hela oerhört substanslöst. Habila riff, skönt oputsat ljudbild helt enligt thrashmodell standard, funktionell sang samt instrumenthanterande i klass med den högre divisionen. Inte sa pjakigt med andra ord, men inte sa värst upphetsande heller. Ytterligare ett ordinärt thrash-band i det medelmattliga ledet. Jag vill dock tilldela tjeckerna ett plus för de rakare rock-elementen, som smälter väl in i den annars riffbaserade musiken. En riktigt kul grej helt enkelt, som de med stil och klass ror i land elegant.

Som en och annan skulle ha uttryckt: duger i krig. Inget som jag med fri vilja placerar i skivspelaren, men gör nagon annan det sa flyr jag väl inte heller rummet eller slänger mig pa stoppknappen. Har du redan inhandlat alla stora thrash-releaser detta ar och fortfarande är hungrande efter mer sa kan Hypnotic face fungera som en tillfällig hungerstillare. Observera ordet tillfällig.

I am listening to this debut album “The End Of Sanity“ of the Czech Thrashers HYPNOTIC FACE the approximately fifteenth time within the last few days and on some songs, the CD even starts to spring (this is when you burn your promos by yourself, dear record label). But I can’t keep myself away from it as I love most parts of the music. The guys play a mixture of Thrash and Speed Metal and remind mainly of bands like ANNIHILATOR, OVERKILL or MEGADETH. There are even a lot of acoustic guitars besides all Thrash riff attacks in the songs of the Czech as well as catchy melodies and some less modern sound effects. The strongest songs of the album, in my opinion, are the groovy and jaunty opener “The Pimp”, the fast “The Devil Within” and “The End Of Sanity” as well as the acoustic guitars introduced “Nameless” and the melodic “Mlahl”. The other tracks are rather average but only “Saturday” is really weak. The good songs are marked by catchy choruses and a very good and variable guitar work, which isn’t rarely reminding of Jeff Waters (ANNIHILATOR) or Dave Mustaine (MEGADETH). The sound of the disc isn’t always first-class but I have also listened to other Thrash Metal discs with an altogether weaker sound. You just have to push the volume a bit, then it will be alright. The sound isn’t harming the quality of the mentioned tracks.

“The End Of Sanity” is a good debut with some highlights as well as some little downpoints for the listener. But the good songs make it up for HYPNOTIC FACE and so this record could develop to something like a secret tip for Thrashers and Speed Metallers, seeking for new and interesting bands in this genre. The Czech won’t reinvent the Thrash Metal area but they add another interesting album. Worthwile to check out for you!

Als die ersten Töne durch die Boxen wummern, fühle ich mich unweigerlich an eines meiner alten Demo-Tapes der tschechischen Thrasher "Terminator" erinnert. Jenes Tape ergatterte ich Anfang der 90er auf ziemlich abenteuerlichen Postwegen. Was das nun mit Hypnotic Face zu tun hat? Die Band ist ebenfalls aus Tschechien, spielt ebenfalls Thrash und klingt wie direkt aus den Früh-90er. Das Quartet singt (leider) in holprigem Englisch. So schlimm wie seinerzeit bei Kruiz ist es nicht geworden, doch der osteuropäische Klang ist unüberhörbar. Tschechisch thrashig wäre bei den vocals meines Erachtens besser gewesen. Hier haben Hypnotic Face eine große Chance vertan. Eine Chance, sich etwas vom allgegenwärtigen Bay Area-Sound abzuheben.
Besonders deutlich empfehlen sich Megadeth beim Songwriting und Jeff Waters bei der Gitarrenarbeit (u.a. bei „In This War“) als Inspiratoren. Mit dem kauzigen Gesang bin ich weitestgehend glücklich. Unverständlich was beim eben erwähnten „In This War“ beim grausig schrägen Refrain passiert ist. Denn ansonsten überzeugt Vilda Sintak mit seiner Stimme (wohl im Vergleich zu den Gesangsleistungen der 80er Bands zu sehen). Die 11 Stücken hämmern in bester traditioneller Thrash-Manier voll auf die 12, bieten vernünftiges Nackenfutter bei tollen, eingängigen Melodien. Dass die Tschechen gar mit Akkustik-Gitarren arbeiten tut „The End Of Sanity“ erstaunlich gut. Es lockert das Soundgewand auf, bringt Abwechslung und verleiht der Scheibe Frische.
Kurzum: Ein gut gepflegter Thrash-Oldtimer in modernern Zeiten, der sich noch ziemlich gut fahren lässt, angenehm im Straßenbild auffällt und den neuen Karren von Jeff Waters locker überholen kann.

Aus dem Land das uns endgültig klargemacht hat, dass wir im Fußball eher die zweite Geige spielen und nach hause fahren müssen, kommen Hypnotic Face. Ihre Landsmänner sind technisch ja eine Augenweide, doch diese Herren müssen sich mit ihrer Musik nicht verstecken. Im Gegensatz zu den meisten anderen tschechischen Bands spielen sie jedoch astreinen US-Thrash in der Tradition von Megadeth und Metallica. Der Sänger hat von beiden Bands etwas und musikalisch gibt es sauberen eingängigen Thrash, der trotz einer etwas zu hohen Produktion zu überzeugen weiß. Bay Area Riffing gepaart mit sehr gutem Bassspiel, gerade in den ruhigen Passagen, macht immer Spaß. Und, je öfter man die Songs hört, desto mehr gewinnen sie an Wert, eingängig, teilweise mit akustischen Parts, wie es Metallica auf der „Master Of Puppets“ taten (‚The Devil Within‘), setzen sie sich im Ohr fest. Technisch müssen sich Hypnotic Face dabei nicht vor ihren Vorbildern verstecken, auch das Songwriting zeigt kaum Schwächen, manche Bridges könnten noch etwas flüssiger gespielt werden, aber dafür, dass es das Debüt der Band ist, darf man nicht meckern. Gerade das Gefühl für den Riff an sich ist ausgeprägt bei dieser Truppe, es kommen prägnante Refrains hinzu (‚In This War‘), so dass man direkt Lust auf ein Konzert bekommt. Wenn man die Eigenständigkeit auch durch genannte Referenzen einschränken mag, so zeigen sie dennoch bereits gute Ansätze sich auch eine eigene kleine Ecke zu schaffen, etwa indem man auch fast arabisch anmutende Melodien wie im Titelsong einbaut. Außerdem spielen Metallica und Megadeth noch solche Musik wie in den Achtzigern? Also, Chance geben, es gibt einfach 45min guten Thrash zu hören.

HYPNOTIC FACE stammen aus Tschechien und liefern mit "The End Of Sanity" ihren ersten Longplayer über das deutsche Label Shark Records ab. Dass die Tschechen exzellente Fußballspieler sind, haben sie ja erst gestern bewiesen, als sie die niederländische Nationalmannschaft bei der Europameisterschaft in Portugal demütigten (dieser Satz musste jetzt einfach sein, hehe).

Aber auch musikalisch kommt immer wieder guter Stoff aus Tschechien in die heimische Stereoanlage und HYPNOTIC FACE zeigen, dass sie ihre Instrumente sehr wohl beherrschen und präsentieren eine eigenwillige Mischung aus Speed- und Thrash Metal, der vor allem durch das variable Gitarrenspiel geprägt wird. Erinnerungen kommen dabei an alte MEGADETH-Zeiten auf, wobei es dem Quartett noch an der nötigen Eingebung fehlt, um in einem Atemzug mit Dave Mustaine & Co genannt zu werden. Das Problem bei HYPNOTIC FACE ist einfach, dass sie ein paar recht unterhaltsame Kompositionen (wie z.B. der straighte Opener "The Pimp" oder der Thrasher "In This War") auf die Scheibe gepackt haben, jedoch auch einige Stücke, die lediglich vor sich hin plätschern und den Thrash/Speed-Fan nicht aus der Reserve locken können. Gewöhnungsbedürftig ist zudem der Gesang, welcher von cleanen Parts über kernige Shouts bis zu fast Crossover-lastigen Wutausbrüchen reicht. Ist in Ordnung, aber international wird es leistungstechnisch dabei nicht reichen. Die elf Tracks auf "The End Of Sanity" weißen weiterhin einen dezenten Rock´n´Roll-Touch auf und finden genügend Auflockerung durch zahlreiche Akustikgitarrenparts. Wie schon anfangs erwähnt sind HYPNOTIC FACE handwerklich sehr gut, allerdings fehlt es ihnen noch an gutem Gespür für mitreißende Songstrukturen, um einen alten Thrash/Speed-Freak wie mich aus den Latschen zu hauen.

Soundtechnisch hätte die Produktion noch etwas fetter ausfallen dürfen und es bleibt abzuwarten, wie sich HYPNOTIC FACE mit ihrem leicht angestaubten Metal-Sound in Zukunft entwickeln werden.

Zu den besseren Kapiteln aus Tschechien, die mir in den letzten Monaten untergekommen sind, gehören HYPNOTIC FACE aus Svitavy, deren große Vorbilder Megadeth (Songwriting) und Annihilator (Gitarrenarbeit) heißen. Dass ihr Debüt "The End Of Sanity" dabei über weite Strecken wie eine bessere Demoproduktion klingt, hat durchaus seinen Charme. Gerade wenn man sich vergengenwärtigt, wie kläglich der Megadeth-Erstling "Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good" einst in Szene gesetzt wurde. Verglichen mit Mustaines originellem, ansonsten aber ziemlich kläglichem Gekrächze, verfügt Gitarrist Vilda Slintak fast über eine ordentliche Stimme. Zudem arbeitet die Combo häufig mit Akustikklampfen, groovt, ohne zu nerven oder zu hip zu sein, und erweist hier und da sogar dem guten alten Rock ´n´ Roll die Ehre.

Bereits seit einer Dekade existiert die tschechische Thrash-Metal Band HYPNOTIC FACE, doch mehr als ein Demo ("The Animalman", 1995) und eine EP ("Written By Life", 1999) gab es bisher nicht. Das ändert sich mit dem mir vorliegenden ersten Langeisen „The End Of Sanity“, mit dem die Osteuropäer ihren Thrash-Idolen (vor allem MEGADETH) Tribut zollen.

Der Opener „The Pimp“ geht direkt in die Vollen! Cooles Riffing gepaart mit peitschenden Drums hinterlässt schon beim ersten Durchlauf einen tollen Eindruck. Der Gesang passt zu der Power Mucke mit recht extrem thrashiger Schlagseite. „From Hell“ beginnt im Gegensatz zu Opener verhältnismäßig harmonisch, doch auch hier überzeugt der aggressive Gesang und verwandelt den Track in ein modernes Stück Thrash, im Refrain sind Vergleiche zu FEAR FACTORY zu erkennen. Sogleich ist die Harmonie vom Intro verflogen und der nur dreiminütige Song gibt zum Ende hin noch mal richtig Gas! „The Devil Within“ startet zwar mit einem heftigen Riff, doch danach ist erstmal akustisches Material angesagt. Jedoch wird das Stück mit zunehmender Dauer schneller; und am Ende gibt es sogar ein Doublebass-Finish. Ebenfalls ein cooler Song! Nun folgt aber wieder purer Thrash! „In This War“ wird vom Bass dominiert und der Song geht nicht eine Sekunde vom Gas. Der gedoubelte Gesang passt hier sehr gut, ebenfalls die doppelläufige Gitarre im Mittelteil, der Song geht voll auf die 12! Der Titeltrack des Albums beginnt wieder mit doppelten Klampfen, die ein etwas arabisches Flair vermitteln. Dieser Exkurs dauert jedoch nicht besonders lange, bald geht es wieder zurück zu altbewährtem. Zwar ist dieses Stück das längste des Albums, doch bisher ist es am wenigsten bemerkenswert, es plätschert eher so dahin, fällt weder positiv noch negativ ins Gewicht. „Nameless“ ist ein ruhig beginnendes Stück mit einigen modernen Einflüssen, die sich durch den ganzen Song ziehen. „End Of Clouds“ geht wieder stärker in die Stilrichtung der ersten Songs, jedoch ohne wie die zu überzeugen. „Trash“ wirkt aber wieder frischer, wenigstens die ersten fast drei Minuten, ehe einige psychedelische Gitarreneffekte eingestreut werden. Nichtsdestotrotz einer der interessanteren Songs, zumal er sich zum Ende hin wieder auf die Stärken der Combo besinnt. „Auch „Sea“ ist wieder einer der besseren weil frischeren Stücke, es klingt ebenso unverbraucht wie „Mlahl“, das jedoch eher im Mid-Tempo-Bereich anzusiedeln ist. Das letzte Lied „Saturday“ beginnt mit einem punkigen Riff und bleibt eigentlich durchgehend in dem Stil. Ein Ende, mit dem man nicht rechnen konnte, aber dennoch kein schlechtes!

Auf der Website der Band gibt es vom aktuellen Album drei Ausschnitte zum Download, ferner sind fünf komplette Songs von der ’99er EP bereitgestellt.

Leider kann die Qualität der ersten drei, vier Stücke nicht über die kompletten 45 Minuten Länge des Albums gehalten werden, erst gegen Ende ging es dann wieder bergauf. Ich schwanke zwischen drei und vier Punkten, und da 3,5 (die ich am liebsten geben würde) nicht erlaubt sind, werden es „nur“ drei, denn eigentlich sollte in einer Band, die seit zehn Jahren existiert, mehr stecken.

Trash metal is alive !! ( le trash est vivant pour ce qui ne comprenne pas l'anglais).
Hypnotic Face est un groupe de la république tcheque, et des la premiere écoute on ne peut que remarquer une ombre de Dave Mustaine derriere les compos !!
Je rassure tous les fans de Megadeth, ce n'est pas le nouveau projet du guitariste chanteur de ce groupe culte.
Bon, parlons bien parlons peu. Hypnotic Face distille un Trash/rock 'n roll/heavy de tres grande classe avec des solos simples mais bien contrôlés et tres propres, des parties acoustiques rares dans le style, et un trash 'n roll puissant qui fait plaisir a nos petites oreilles. Au niveau de l'enregistrement, le son n'est pas exceptionnel, limite garage, mais super appréciable pour ce style de musique ( le son d'un bon vieux Motorhead, Metallica !!)
D'ailleurs le chant est un gros croisement avec Megadeth, Metallica, Motorhead, Pantera Destruction…
En globalité l'album est franchement bon, mais (car il y a toujours un mais) certaines compos se ressemblent bizarrement, surtout au niveau du chant. C'est bien dommage mais ce détail est vite oublié grâce a des parties tres bien senties.
Alors, tous a vos lecteur K7, et hop flash back dans les années 90' !!!!

Dass Thrash Metal, der nach Bay Area klingt, nicht unbedingt aus selbiger kommen muss, ist kein Geheimnis. Mit "The End Of Sanity" habe ich hier ein Beispiel aus Tschechien vorliegen. HYPNOTIC FACE blicken dabei gerade mal auf ein Demo ("The Animalman", 1995) und eine EP ("Written By Life", 1999) zurück und haben nun ein Langeisen eingespielt, das wahrlich nicht von schlechten Eltern ist. Da bleibt natürlich zu hoffen, dass die Arbeitsgeschwindigkeit mit dem neuen Label im Rücken ein wenig beschleunigt wird und man nicht jedes Mal vier bis fünf Jahre für ein Album braucht. Die Tschechen hören sich vom Sound her ein bisschen wie MEGADETH zu "Peace Sells"- und "Rust In Peace"-Zeiten an, aber auch andere Bay-Area-Kapellen (TESTAMENT, DEATH ANGEL) und Gruppen wie OVERKILL oder ANNIHILATOR scheinen ihre Spuren hinterlassen zu haben. Die Songs gehen knackig und flott auf die Zwölf, haben aber auch eine große Portion Eingängigkeit und Melodiösität zu bieten, was "The End Of Sanity" zu einer richtig guten Scheibe macht. Lediglich der Gesang klingt mir manchmal etwas zu schwachbrüstig, lässt aber wie auch der Rest vom Schützenfest eine coole Oldschool-Attitüde durchblicken. Allerdings muss ich auch feststellen, dass die Klasse der beiden Auftaktsongs 'The Pimp' und 'From Hell' nicht über die gesamte Länge durchgehalten wird und sich auch ein paar Mal Durchschnittliches mit eingeschlichen hat. Bemerkenswert für eine Thrash-Scheibe ist aber auf jeden Fall die Spielzeit von über einer dreiviertel Stunde. Insgesamt bietet "The End Of Sanity" zwar nichts wirklich Neues, kann aber durch die flotten, locker und frisch vorgetragenen Songs durchaus begeistern. Auch wenn man dem Album nicht gerade anhört, dass es anno 2004 fabriziert wurde, Spaß macht es allemal. Freunde von o.g. Referenzbands können hier eigentlich nichts falsch machen.

Hypnotic Face stammen aus Tschechien und spielen, Überraschung, keinen Grindcore. Nein, diese Newcomer-Band hat sich vielmehr den traditionellen Thrash-Klängen gewidmet und bewegt sich irgendwo im Fahrwasser solcher Bands wie Megadeth und Annihilator – und das auf nahezu ebenbürtigem Niveau. Dabei agieren die Tschechen nicht nur äußerst abwechslungsreich sondern würzen ihre Musik auch noch mit diversen außergewöhnlichen Sounds wie etwa beim recht experimentellen „Nameless“, scheuen sich aber auch nicht davor beim abschließenden „Saturday“ einige Rock `n´ Roll-Elemente hinzuzufügen. Außerdem beschränken sich Hypnotic Face nicht auf Highspeed-Nummern im Einheitstempo, sondern bieten neben den flotteren Stücken wie „The Pimp“ und „In This War“ auch schleppend anlaufende Songs wie „The End Of Sanity“, „Sea“ oder aber Midtempo-Banger wie “Trash“. Bei „The Devil Within“ werden sogar einige Akustik-Gitarren eingesetzt, welche die herrliche Atmosphäre dieser dynamischen Komposition weiter untermalen und für den Facettenreichtum dieser Scheibe sprechen. Eigentlich gibt es keinen Grund, dieser Platte kritisch gegenüber zu stehen, denn wenn es überhaupt etwas zu meckern gäbe, dann wäre dies der anfangs etwas höhere Gesang, an den man sich aber schnell gewöhnt hat. Sieht man mal vom durchschnittlichen Lückenfüller „End Of Clouds“ ab, hat diese tschechische Band hier einen Einstieg nach Maß gelandet, der Anhänger von Annihilator, Megadeth und Konsorten definitiv begeistern sollte. Da auch die äußeren Rahmenbedingungen, sprich die druckvolle Produktion, voll und ganz stimmen, kann ich „The End Of Sanity“ ohne jeglichen Vorbehalt weiterempfehlen.

Nati nel 1994 i Cechi Hypnotic Face hanno debuttato discograficamente nel 1998 con il mini lp “Written by Life”, ma arrivano solo oggi con questo “The End of Sanity” al debutto sulla lunga distanza.
L’apertura e affidata a “The Pimp”, un gran pezzo Thrash che unisce al suo interno influenze Megadeth periodo “So Far So Good…So What”, soprattutto per quello che riguarda il riff iniziale e la voce del cantante/chitarrista Vilda Slintak, Anthrax vecchio stile, per via delle ritmiche della canzone, e un tocco di Testament nell’impostazione delle linee vocali delle strofe, da questo miscuglio Thrash gli Hypnotic Face sono riusciti a tirare fuori un brano davvero molto ben riuscito e di sicuro impatto, nel disco trovano posto canzoni davvero ben riuscite, anche se l’influenza Megadeth a volte si mette fin troppo in evidenza, ma pezzi tipo “The Devil Within”, che sorprende grazie all’alternarsi di parti acustiche e molto dolci ad altre decisamente piu tirate, “In This War”, tirata e cattiva, con il basso di Vladka Liskutinova che fa davvero un lavoro notevole, come per altro in tutto il disco, “The End of Sanity”, con ottimi riff dal sapore orientaleggiante che danno un tocco di originalita al brano, prima che la canzone parta su ritmi mai troppo eloci ma decisamente rocciosi, la splendida “Nameless”, forse il brano piu riuscito del disco, in virtu innanzitutto della splendida linea vocale, aggressiva ma dotata del giusto appeal melodico, “Mlhal”, un mid tempo Thrash davvero potente, con un ottimo lavoro delle chitarre del gia citato Vilda e di Radek BoB Bednar, molto azzeccati anche i break melodici che spezzano un po’ il ritmo della song andando a donare dinamicita al tutto, e la conclusiva “Saturday”, dotata di un feeling molto Rock ‘n Roll, impossibile davvero non muovere la testa ascoltandola, sono davvero molto ben riusciti, purtroppo a fare da contraltare a questi brani trovano posto canzoni quali “Trash”, non male ma penalizzata da una linea vocale decisamente non all’altezza, “End of Clouds” e “Sea”, che non sono brutti pezzi, ma che presentano il grave difetto di essere anonime, scorrono via senza lasciare il segno in alcun modo, e soprattutto “From Hell”, una canzone che personalmente trovo davvero brutta, sia come arrangiamenti che come idea di base.
I suoni sono tecnicamente ben fatti, ma hanno il grave difetto di essere un po’ freddi e poco potenti, il che va ad influire in maniera piuttosto pesante sulla resa del disco.
Tecnicamente la band e decisamente molto ben preparata in tutti i suoi elementi, anche se una citazione d’onore la meritano sicuramente il gia citato cantante Valdi e l’altrettanto gia citata bassista Vladka.
Finalmente nel panorama Thrash mondiale inizia a farsi sentire qualche nuovo gruppo, al di la del ritorno di parecchi mostri sacri, di sicuro questi Hypnotic Face non sono dei fenomeni, ma hanno palesato la capacita di scrivere buone canzoni, e soprattutto la rinascita del Thrash, che penso di poter dire sia in atto, ha bisogno di nomi nuovi, speriamo solo che altre band come questi Cechi possa iniziare a farsi sentire, il nome degli Hypnotic Face e comunque da tenere presente da chi ascolta questo tipo di musica.

Der CD-Fresszettel prahlt unverhohlen mit Megadeth-Anleihen bei dieser tschechischen Gruppe. In Sachen Gitarren-Arbeit kann man diese Einordnung auch uneingeschränkt stehen lassen, aber ansonsten befahren HYPNOTIC FACE schon eine etwas andere Schiene. Thrash Metal alter Schule prallt hier auf gewisse Crossover-Anleihen, ganz grob könnte man dieser Kapelle eine Mixtur zwischen Sacred Reich (Vorwärtsdrang) und Suicidal Tendencies (Shouting) attestieren. Auch nicht allzu experimentelle Sepultura flattern dem geneigten Zuhörer hie und da in seine kranken Gedanken. HYPNOTIC FACE mühen sich zwar redlich, einen gewissen Langzeiteffekt hervorzurufen, letztendlich geht dieser Plan aber nicht auf, da “The End Of Sanity” in seiner Gesamtheit einfach zu unspektakulär ist. Im Genre gibt es aber durchaus schlechtere Vertreter, insofern ist mir die Platte eine kugelrunde Acht wert.

Tjeckien har precis blivit medlemmar i EU och det är dags att börja ta musikscenen där pa allvar. Att folk i de gamla öststaterna har haft ett stort intresse för hardrock är känt sedan tidigare och de har en växande metalscen som är väl värd att undersöka. Hypnotic Face är en bra början.
Kraftigt influerade av band som tidig Testament och Megadeth är denna skiva en ilsken sak som frenetiskt piskar högtalarnas membran i vardagsrummet. Och jag flinar glatt som ett barn i godisaffären. Sa här ska det lata! Produktionen är kompetent och kompositionerna kapabla till nästan vad som helst. Ofta tycker jag att band fran de forna öststaterna har en kompromisslöshet som vara västeuropeiska och amerikanska band saknar. Det är rakare rör och mindre krusiduller vilket ofta fungerar till deras fördel.
Fast ibland kan produktionen vara lite platt och odynamisk tyvärr. Den där riktigt tunga ljudbilden framträder bara nästan sa där perfekt som man vill ha det. Jag skulle ocksa önska att Hypnotic Face helt slutade med de influenser av rak pubrock som finns pa nagra spar. Det drar ner betyget en aning. Men da detta är bandets första fullängdare pa ett större bolag sa hoppas jag att detta är skavanker de kan putsa bort till nästa skiva.
För dessa invändningar till trots spelar Hypnotic Face thrash metal av finaste beskaffenhet med stort hjärta. Sa ta chansen och upptäck en ny del av den europeiska gemenskapen. Det här sparkar stjärt i de övre divisionerna av thrashligan!

Hypnotic Face förknippas enligt medföljande promopapper med Megadeth och dess sĺngare Dave Mustaine, detta är dock för mig helt obegripligt, eftersom Dave Mustaine har en röst som skiljer sig helt frĺn resten av Bay Area gängen och det har inte denna killen, lĺngt ifrĺn. Hypnotic Face är ett band som härstammar frĺn Tjeckien och det är visserligen inga tvivel om vilka förebilder bandet har.
Här pratar vi Melodisk power metal fast med starka influenser frĺn band som Megadeth. Det är för den delen en rätt skön blandning som bandet fĺtt ihop, och att dom just har blandat in lite hederlig Bay Area thrash i det hela bordar nog bara gott för dom.
”The End Of Sanity” som skivan heter är en varierande skiva och det är för den delen inga större fel man hittar, det skulle i sĺ fall vara ljudkvalitén som inte hör till dom bättre. Som tidigare nämnt lĺter det bra och framförallt lite nytt när bandet blandar ihop sin soppa av Megadeth inspirerad Trash och melodisk power metal.
Jag vill inte pĺstĺ att jag hittar nĺgon favoritlĺt pĺ skivan, eftersom det i alla fall för mig är pĺ det viset att jag lyssnar pĺ denna plattan 2-3 ggr, och kommer förmodligen att glömma bort den sedan, för att plocka fram den om ett par mĺnader och inse att fan detta är ju helt okej, det känns som att bandet försvinner lite i mängden av alla band med nĺgorlunda liknande metal.
Om inte kommer Hypnotic face antagligen stiga i graderna om dom ger ut en riktigt bra skiva med framförallt en bra ljudkvalité. Nu skall man nog inte ta i för mycket när det gäller denna biten eftersom promoexemplaret som kommit mig tillhanda är en bränd cd´r (inte av bästa kvalitet) skiva tillsammans med ett papper förmodligen ihop satt av skivbolaget med reklam för bandet och dess Dave Mustaine liknande sĺngare, vilket jag fortfarande inte kan förstĺ, har dessa killar nĺgon gĺng hört Megadeth och dess sĺngare? Troligtvis inte.

This is a band from Czech Republic and they play 80s Thrash-Metal with a Rock’n’Roll approach. They actually sound like a typical 80s German Metalband, a bit like RAGE and very early BLIND GUARDIAN. It’s not bad at all what we get to hear, but it sounds all a bit dated and the songs do not really impress. 11 tracks are included, and the production/instrumental part sounds pretty good, but vocally it doesn’t sound really strong. Still we can enjoy songs like “The devil within”, “The end of sanity”, “Nameless” and “Trash” are nice typical 80s Heavy Metal songs and recommended if you like bands such as RAGE, HIGH TENSION, NOISEHUNTER, LIVING DEATH, VAMPYR (remember any of them???), but if you want to hear some more up to date Melodic Metal this CD is not really interesting for you, but there are enough people out there who are still interested in classy 80s (German) Metal and then they can check out this CD by a non-German band who play exactly like the German Metalbands did in the 1980s... Erstaunlich, welchen Einfluss Mr. Dave "kreativ mit Heroin" Mustaine auch heute noch auf junge Musiker hat. Wie auch auf die Newcomer HYPNOTIC FACE, die das musikalische Werk von MEGADETH wohl mit der Muttermilch aufgesogen haben. Ähnlich wie bei den deutschen MECHANIX, die ihre MEGADETH-Liebe allerdings noch weiter auf die Spitze treiben als HYPNOTIC FACE. Aber auch die Tschechen machen auf "The End Of Sanity" unmissverständlich klar, dass sie Anfang bis Mitte der 80er Jahre gerne dabei gewesen wären, als METALLICA, EXODUS oder eben MEGADETH in der San Francisco Bay durchstarteten. Und so fragt man sich hier bei jedem zweiten Riff oder Solo, auf welchem Klassiker man das schon mal gehört hat. Nur schade, dass 1984 20 Jahre her ist und eine solche Scheibe anno 2004 gerade noch 13 Käufer findet. Anno 2004 wird Dave Mustaine zum wiedergeborenen Christen (gerade der!) und METALLICA sind bereits vor 14 Jahren durch Doppelgänger von Alpha Centauri ersetzt worden. Da tut eine Scheibe wie "The End Of Sanity" richtig gut, die vielen Zitate und Querverweise machen die Scheibe zu einer kurzweiligen Zeitreise. Und das, obwohl die ein oder andere Passage arg verschroben wirkt und nicht jede Songidee ans Ziel kommt. Wenn sich jedoch HF weiterhin auf ihre Stärken besinnen, kann da noch einiges kommen. Vorerst gibt es sechs Punkte. Anspieltipp: der Opener "The Pimp". Schöne Grüße in die Tschechoslowakei...

Fazit: MEGADETH-beeinflusster Speed / Thrash aus der tschechischen Bay Area.
